Youth gain second league win

CN EMLYN YOUTH 11  BURRY PORT 5

On a blistery dry February afternoon the local youth side produced a controlled performance against their West Carmarthenshire opponents. The Emlyn side, missing a number of regulars were boosted by the inclusion of a number of the under 16 squad.

The game started with both teams attempting to gain the ascendancy and the initial exchanges produced a cat and mouse game with Emlyn producing a number of attacks deep into their opponents territory. Young scrum half Sam Forester Evans showed up well and cleaned up a number of loose lineout deflections, by gathering and setting up ruck possession.

The only score of the half belonged to the home side as they attacked deep into the visitors 22 with a flowing handling movement. The ball was passed to No 8 Aled Jones who made a strong burst before offloading to Flanker Ifan Lloyd who crashed over for an unconverted try.

Burry Port missed two long range penalty attempts and the blustery wind and sticky conditions made things difficult for the kickers.

Half Time – CNE 5 Burry Port 0.

The second half started with Emlyn attempting to run the ball but they found that their opponents had a sound defensive unit. On several occasions Wingers Olly Butterworth and Mark Ramsey were stopped in their tracks.

With both defences dominant it became obvious that the victors would be the team who controlled territory and possession and Emlyn replied from the boot of No 10 Crwys Rees to kick them deep into their opponents 22.

Following an earlier miss, Outside half Crwys Rees put the home side further ahead with a 22m penalty.  Emlyn were now two scores ahead and used their forwards Jake Thomas, Gareth Stevenson and Ifan Davies to run at their opponents.

With 10 minutes to go Burry Port took a quick 22m drop out and following a kick and chase managed to score an unconverted try, scored by centre Steffan Roberts.

Emlyn were determined not to let a victory slip from their grasp and they took a grip of the game with controlled play, which took them into their opponents half. Following  a penalty awarded for a ruck infringement Crwys Rees stepped up to pop over a 35m penalty, which sealed a welcome home win and 4 league points.

The game was never going to be a classic but Emlyn stuck to the task and produced a committed performance against a team who are above them in the Youth league.
